What is the point to taking a photograph?

The point of making a photograph is to have a visual image that’s a representation of my thoughts, but the reason for making a photograph is something wholly different. The reason is very personal. I’m very, very lucky that I’m able to make photography for myself. I do it for myself and I’m lucky enough that people then want to experience it, or engage with it, or understand it.

In Bali there is a philosophy called, “Gotong Royong”, which roughly translates to, “Working together for the benefit of the whole.”

While we were in Bali, we were able to see this philosophy in so many places…at the temple where women worked together to weave baskets of offerings, and again at the John Hardy manor where women wove intricate chains, each one taking a piece of the work and together creating something so beautiful…

It was almost as if time stood still here, frozen in perfect bloom, simplistic in its approach to a beautiful life.
